Psalms 56,57
The voice of the Psalmist expresses grateful trust in difficult circumstances. Opposed by his own countrymen, David sought refuge in Gath (1Sam. 21:10), where he found himself under restraint, for the Philistines recognised the champion. He “feigned madness in their hands,” but later escaped (ch. 22:1). So he expresses himself in a warm trust and grateful appreciation to the care and protection of Yahweh. Prophetically, the Psalm expresses the feelings of Messiah, considered mad by his brethren, who acted the part of Philistines, because of his extreme zeal for his Father. So the Psalmist writes: [1] A confident plea for help in the face of bitter adversaries: vv. 1-4. The word “merciful” is from the Hebrew ‘chanan,’ with the idea of bending or stooping in kindness to an inferior. Thus to be gracious, as the Psalmist realised that none other can assist him. Men would “swallow him up” and he uses the Hebrew ‘enosh’ for man, indicating the weak, sickly, fleshly men, and even those were too belligerent and bitter toward him. Every day they were ‘fighting,’ and there was no respite from their antagonism. This was similarly the case of the Lord Yahshua. [2] A repeated plea describing the attacks of his enemies: vv. 5-11. [3] Confidence in the salvation of Yahweh: vv. 12-13. • Then in Psalm 57 the Psalmist continues with a plea for help against ruthless foes, as he is forced into exile by Saul. The psalm teaches us that faith does not free us from trial, but it does enable us to triumph over it. So he pens: [1] A plea for protection: vv. 1-5. [2] His joy and thanksgiving on the defeat of the enemy: vv. 6-11. • These psalms allow us to identify with the experiences of David, and his greater Son, as they continued to uphold the divine righteousness under trial. Both psalms conclude with honour and praise to the Almighty, whose wisdom overshadows the experiences of the faithful. — Logos.
