Psalm 33
David, the Psalmist, praises God for His great Goodness, and gives expression to the principles of Rom. 11:22. It answers the invitation of Psalm 32:11, and is thus an example of the Songs of Deliverance referred to in Psa. 32:7. It commences with [1] A Call to Praise: vv. 1-3, showing the feelings in excess of joy. The “instrument of ten strings” is probably the largest instrument. The RV has “the Psaltery of ten strings.” A harmonious blending of voice and music ascribing praise to Yahweh; thus a joining in fellowship with Him. Probably the largest instrument of the times. The “new song” is not necessarily new in words but renewed in meaning (see Psa. 40:3, cp. Isa. 42:10; Psa. 144:9, for David’s prayer facing Goliath). [2] The Grounds of Praise: vv. 4-11. The Word properly understood creates this (cp. Psa. 19:8). [3] The Blessed Condition of His People: vv. 12-19. In spite of the present circumstances of life, there are blessings to the people of Yahweh, for they understand the situations facing them from time to time. What an encouraging verse is 18; the eyes of Yahweh are tenderest, and very perceptive. We can rely upon His goodness if we remain in His sight. [4] The Confidence that They Repose in the Almighty: vv. 20-22. So the Psalm expresses the power of the Word, and the privilege derived from the knowledge thereby. Yahweh is help and shield; David’s confidence is the Almighty, not in host or horse. — Logos.
