Psalm 31
David expresses in song the desperate condition in which he finds himself. The Psalm sets out [1] Prayer for deliverance: vv. 1-2. [2] The Grace of Yahweh: vv. 3-5. [3] The past experiences of the Psalmist: vv. 6-8. [4] Descriptions of present troubles: vv. 9-13. [5] Protestations of trust: vv. 14-16. [6] Assurance of being heard: vv. 17-18. [7] Thankful praise: vv. 19-20. [8] For hearing the voice of the Psalmist: vv. 21-22. [9] Exhortation to faithfulness: vv. 23-24. The Psalm is very emotional. Worn out in mind and body, despised, defamed, and persecuted, the Psalmist casts himself upon God. Faith upholds him as he recalls past mercies; despondency overwhelms him as he thinks of his present experiences, until the clouds clear and the sunlight of God’s goodness floods his being. Yet, as is the character of the psalms, it is Messianic in its spirit and emotion; therefore it is applicable to both the individual and multitudinous Yahshua. Indeed, this is evident in verse 5: “Into Thy hand I commit my spirit…” These are the words cited by the Lord at the end of his trauma on the stake of Golgotha: “Into Thy hand I commend my spirit…” (Luke 23:46). And having said that he expired. But what wonderful words continue in the Psalm: “Thou hast redeemed me, O Yahweh, El of Truth” (v. 5), and with what unrecorded words came from the mouth of the Master as he rose on the first day, to see the reality of his redemption. And both statements will venture from the mouth of the faithful believers as they come to the end of their life, and then through resurrection see the glory of immortality invested on them by their divine Husband. No wonder, the concluding verse of Psalm 31 is so expressive of the joy of belief. Without doubt, Jeremiah gained inspiration from verse 14 (see Jer. 20:11). — Logos.
