Genesis 24
\The importance of the marriage covenant is revealed in the selection of a wife for Isaac. Note the repeated command: “bring not my son thither again” (vv. 6, 8). It was essential that a bride be selected for Isaac, to continue the family of faith. Note also the respectful address of the servant (unnamed, but considered to be Eliezer, mentioned 15 years previously): the word “master” occurs in vv. 10, 12, 14, 27, 36, 37, 39, 42, 44, 48, 49, 51, 54, 56, 65, emphasising the need of respect, service and obedience. Careful instructions are given, and the process of obtaining a wife is undertaken through the work of the servant (typical of the ministering angels in selecting a bride for Yahshua, the Greater Son of Abraham: Heb. 1:14). So the record continues: [1] Instructions for Eliezer: vv. 1-6. [2] Divine overshadowing of the mission: vv. 7-9. The messenger is required to separate a bride for Isaac through the Word declared. [3] Co-operating with God: vv. 10-14. Eliezer uses the resources available to him, typical of the events of our lives. [4] Qualities of Rebekah observed: vv. 15-16. She is seen to have spiritual characteristics appropriate to the marriage of the Seed of Promise. [5] Rebekah’s response: vv. 17-21. [6] The reward offered in marriage: vv. 22-25 (typical of the benefits of the Truth). [7] Thanksgiving: vv. 26-28. [8] Impression on Rebekah’s relations: vv. 29-31 (the attitude of the world). [9] Care for his helpers: v. 32. The overshadowing divine concern for the “helping” prophets and apostles of God. [10] Preaching the gospel: vv. 33-48. [11] The appeal: v. 49. [12] Personal decision required: vv. 50-51. [13] Bought with a price: vv. 52-53. [14] Rest after toil: v. 54. [15] Delay opposed: vv. 55-58. [16] Rebekah’s pilgrimage: vv. 59-60. The walk of faith. [17] Meeting the bridegroom: vv. 61-63. The grand joy of seeing her beloved face to face. [18] The marriage: vv. 64-67. The great joy of this chapter is seen in the reflections it has on the divine marriage of Yahshua and his Ecclesia Bride. — Logos.
