Psalm 104

Called by some “Creation’s Hymn,” this Psalm sets forth in beautiful and descriptive language the revelation of Yahweh in nature. It is a companion Psalm to 103, for whereas that one praises Yahweh for His goodness and mercy, this one does for His power and wisdom. They are wonderful attributes of the mighty character of the Creator. The Psalm is based on Genesis 1, which reveals the fact of creation, and now the Psalmist sings the praises of creation. It reveals that Yahweh not only worked to produce, but continues to labour to maintain His purpose with mankind and the earth (Jn. 5:17) – and this is for its ultimate glorification as prophesied in the concluding expressions (Psa. 104:35). The Psalmist reveals that [1] Yahweh is worthy of praise: v. 1. That [2] His glory is in the heavens: vv. 2-4. That there is a [3] Manifestation of that glory in the earth: vv. 5-24. That [4] His majesty permeates the seas: vv. 25-26. [5] His relation to all living things: vv. 27-30. That [6] Yahweh’s might will ensure the establishing of His purpose: vv. 31-32; and concludes with [7] A Vow to praise Yahweh at all times: vv. 33-35. There are great blessings which come from waiting on God (v. 27), for in His power we live and move and have our being. Let this song be a harmony from the heart, as we recall the beginning of all things — and particularly that “beginning” which has to do with our consciousness of His Word in our lives, and His purpose before our eyes. — Logos
