Genesis 19 is a complex and challenging chapter in the Bible with multiple significant events. Here’s a breakdown of the key points you mentioned:

  1. Who is Lot?: Lot is a figure in the Old Testament. He was the nephew of Abraham. Lot lived in Sodom, a city that, along with Gomorrah, was notorious for its wickedness. Earlier in Genesis, Abraham had interceded with God to spare the city if righteous people could be found there. Lot is identified as a righteous man in the midst of a corrupt city.
  2. Men After Lot: The “men” referred to in Genesis 19 are actually the inhabitants of Sodom. They surrounded Lot’s house after he had taken in two angelic visitors (who appeared in the form of men). The men of Sodom demanded that Lot bring out his guests so that they could have sexual relations with them. This incident is indicative of the extreme moral depravity that characterized Sodom and Gomorrah, leading to their eventual destruction.
  3. Lot and His Daughters: After Sodom is destroyed, Lot and his daughters flee to a cave in the mountains. Believing that they were the only survivors on earth, Lot’s daughters decide to have children with their father to continue the human race. They get Lot drunk on two consecutive nights, and each daughter sleeps with him without his knowledge or consent, resulting in both daughters becoming pregnant. This part of the story reflects the complicated and often morally challenging narratives found in the Old Testament.

These events in Genesis 19 are often subject to various interpretations and discussions, especially regarding their moral and theological implications. The narrative reflects the complexities of human behavior and morality in biblical times and serves as a backdrop for God’s judgment and mercy throughout the Bible.

Think of the name ‘Sodom & Gomorrah’… it’s where we get the word sodomy from. The people were as sinful and evil as you could imagine, hence their utter destruction at the hand of the Deity’s messengers (angels). They found none righteous, except Lot.

Lot was Abraham’s nephew who went with him out of Ur in the Chaldees when God called Abraham to leave and go to a land which He would show him. It’s the start of Abrahams journey and faith. Lots dad was Abrahams brother and had died. They’re had been a famine in the land just before Abraham and Lot separated - their herdsmen had began to fight as living together they had so much cattle etc the land couldn’t feed them - so Lot chose to move to the outskirts of Sodom (as it looked good to him).
